My passion for fashion goes far beyond aesthetics and wanting to look good. I believe that clothing tells a story and that the way you choose to show up can send a bold message to the world. It’s no secret that your first visual impression speaks for you. And I feel most confident when I know I’m presenting myself in an intentional way.
Others may see clothing as trivial, but I see it as an opportunity to empower myself and declare what I stand for without having to speak. One of the brands that makes me feel my best for any occasion is Express! Their broad selection of basics and tailored pieces always allows me to put my best foot forward. I really love how any piece can be styled to look effortless, smart and polished – or a mixture of both!
For Women’s Empowerment month, I’ve been thinking a lot about the conscious and unconscious ways I express my femininity and power through what I wear. The history of the fashion industry is long and complicated, and women have not always been at the forefront. Now is our time to rise up and embrace the right to present ourselves the way we want to be seen.
Below, I’m sharing some tips on how you can use fashion to empower women (and yourself):
Use your clothes to make a statement
You have an opportunity to make clear statements with your wardrobe, whether literally or subliminally. You can make a (literal) statement through trendy graphic tees! For Women’s Empowerment Month, and all year round, you can send a clear message by sporting feminist slogan t-shirts like this one from Express. The more we spread these messages, the more commonplace they become, and the more swiftly we can integrate images of female power into our society. Express offers a few other options (here and here) that are bold and inspirational.
Get comfortable in your own skin
As women, a lot of the clothing marketed towards us is not always comfortable. But, there’s a difference between teetering around in heels for the sake of looking good – and creating a balanced outfit that doesn’t make you feel trapped.
A way that this manifests for me is through my consistency of wearing denim. I always want to feel comfortable at the base of any outfit – not like I’m walking around in somebody else’s shoes. Having denim as a personal staple makes me feel most comfortable even when I’m in the midst of taking on new fashion risks.
Express jeans are no doubt one of my favorites! I’ve been obsessed with these super high-waisted jeggings for casual wear. The fit is so slimming and flexible while the exposed buttons add the perfect finishing touch.
Let your style reflect who you are
Everybody’s style is different, and that freedom and creativity is what gives us power in making clothing personal. Trends are there to be taken on and made our own. I’ve always appreciated Express’ wearable approach to trends that lets you show who you really are – even in an office environment. For example, these sleek booties, the ruched sleeves on the blazer, and the button details on my jeans. It’s just so much easier to feel confident in an outfit that you know is reflective of who you are.
