I think it is safe to say that we are quickly surpassing the days in which you can get away with no jacket – or even a light one for that matter. It took a little while but SoCal is finally starting to really feel like fall and the drop in temperatures shows it. Outerwear is no longer an option but a necessity. It can be annoying because it sometimes it feels as if a coat can ruin a cute outfit. However, in these cases, it is best to embrace your jacket and have it accent or be the centerpiece of your look! Today, I’m sharing all the essential coats every woman should own and that I always break out every winter.
The Classic Trench
The trench coat always gives me some serious heart eyes. I think it is such a chic and timeless style that looks amazing layered over every single outfit. A high quality trench is 100% worth the investment because it shields you from both wind and rain.
Camel Coat
I’m sure you’ve heard this a million times by now, but a camel coat is the ultimate classic outerwear piece. It can take you from the work week to the weekends and you can layer it over every single holiday outfit. A girl can never have too many camel coats.
Plaid Coat
I’m not a huge prints and patterns person, but plaid is something that I always look forward to in the winter. It’s a super chic way to make a statement without something too over the top or trendy. It’s also such an easy to dress up an outfit on a gloomy day.
Teddy or Shearling Coat
This season is all about the texture. In terms of outerwear, we are seeing a ton of shearling and sherpa. This is seemingly the new faux-fur and I love it because it provides a bit more of a casual, cozy take. Some of my favorite items within this trend are shearling lined faux-leather jackets and the all-over teddy coat. Thankfully, as much as this is trending right now, it’s also one of the more practical styles because it definitely keeps you insulated.
Quilted Puffer
When it comes to practicality and a coat made for everyday wear, a quilted puffer is the best solution. The puffer jacket is not groundbreaking by any means, but the large silhouette is 2019’s new age take on it and I am here for it! I love a longer style that acts as a blanket – it’s the perfect outerwear option for streetwear enthusiasts.
Belted Coat
Generally, coats can hide your shape due to their thicker fabrications and larger structure. However, the belted jacket is here to save the day this year. Coats with built-in waist belts are perfect for staying warm while also keeping your womanly figure. Not to mention, they look so incredibly chic on!
Tailored Wool Coat
A tailored coat is another classic style that works for both men and women. It instantly adds polished and will hold all the layers you’re wearing. I’ll often wear mind draped over the shoulders to let my outfit peek out from underneath.
Maxi Coat
In terms of silhouette, another trend that continues to arise in popularity is a longer hemline. I am seeing a ton of traditional jackets with a much longer silhouette. The maxi coat is definitely for those who want to ensure every part of their outfit makes a statement – including the outer layer. Whether it be a trench or a pea coat, this maxi length does a really good job of elongating the entire body.
Military-Inspired Coat
I love anything military-inspired but especially a coat that comes in olive/army green. It looks strong but still feels feminine and sophisticated. You can throw it over jeans and a chunky sweater to dress up your outfit.
Coatigan
Fall and winters are pretty mild in SoCal as I’m sure you can imagine, so a coat isn’t always entirely necessary – and that’s where a coatigan comes into play. It’s a hybrid between a coat and a cardigan and perfect for layering when temperatures aren’t near freezing.
