How to Style Sweater Dresses

Knitwear doesn’t just stop at chunky sweaters and cozy turtlenecks. Sweater dresses have been a wardrobe staple for me this season, and this standalone piece has been making transitional dressing that much easier – from both summer to fall and day to night. They also make the perfect base when layering for fall.

I love how sweater dresses give off a polished, put-together look – minus all the effort. It gives me more space to be more creative and fun with my styling. Here are a few ways I’m styling sweater dresses this fall.

Neutrals

It’s no surprise here, but I love styling neutrals year-round. It also helps that earth tones are a style trend this season. Mixing shades of cream, ivory, grey and beige is an easy and effortless way to elevate any outfit. They’re also versatile, which makes them wearable year-round (weather permitting, of course). When it comes to styling neutrals, my tips are to mix textures, pick complementary tones and pick one piece to build around. The sweater dress is the staple piece in this particular outfit, and I mixed textures by layering a wool coat over the ribbed dress. It helps break up the grey tones and adds depth to my look.

Edgy

Lace-up boots are one of my favorite must-have shoes for fall, and I’ve been loving pairing them with mini sweater dresses for an edgy look. To add more detail, I like to pair them with printed tights and a textured bag (another fall trend I can’t get enough of). Another way to achieve the edgy look is with combat boots and chain detailing.

Comfortable

Sweater dresses are ideal for when you want to feel comfortable yet put together. To achieve a more relaxed and casual look, you can pair an oversized sweater dress with sneakers, flats or ankle boots for maximum comfort.

Animal print

Animal print is one trend I’ll never be able to stay away from, and this season it’s croc-embossed knee-high boots. I love playing and experimenting with different trends each season and seeing how I can incorporate them into my everyday style. Since sweater dresses are such a simple and neutral piece, I added a pop of texture and color to this particular outfit with a pair of croc-embossed boots. You can also do this with other prints like zebra, snakeskin and leopard, but they don’t have to be in the form of boots. Try styling your sweater dress with animal print coats, bags and accessories for a chic, trendy look!
