As the temperature starts to drop and we slowly transition into fall and some of my favorite fall trends, now is the perfect time to show off your layering skills. The easiest way to do that is by using your favorite basics that are already in your wardrobe. It’s no surprise that I love wearing and styling neutrals, but they also make for the best layering essentials. When it comes to layering, it’s not about being complicated but combining simple pieces to create an overall luxe and sophisticated look. I like to think of it like this: base item + main item + outerwear + accessories. Here are some basics that layer well for fall.
Turtlenecks
Does anyone else love turtlenecks for fall? They’re one of my favorite seasonal pieces because they’re extremely versatile when it comes to styling and layering. They’re a foundational layer that can easily be built on. I also love the polished and elevated look neutral turtlenecks can give to any outfit.
Knitwear
Fall is also known as sweater weather, and for good reason. Sweaters are a fall staple and a wardrobe essential, especially when it comes to layering. Just like turtlenecks, they’re an easy and versatile foundational base for any outfit.
Sweater dresses
Sweater dresses are a cozy staple item that I love including in my fall wardrobe. They can easily be transitioned from day to night and from fall/winter to spring. I think of dresses as the main component of my outfit, so in the fall I love styling them with tights and tall boots (like these!) and layering on a coat to tie the look together.
Cardigans
Layering cardigans over sweaters, turtlenecks, and dresses add the perfect layer of warmth. I also like to style printed cardigans under neutral-colored coats to incorporate texture and color into my outfit (like this leopard one!).
Coats
Coats are definitely a fall must-have and a trend I love every year. They’re a bigger staple piece and the best way to layer onto and polish any outfit. This fall, I’ve been loving cozier pieces like trenchcoats, wool coats, and peacoats in deeper colors like black, tan, and grey.
Scarves
Scarves are one of my favorite fall accessories. It’s an easy finishing layer to add to any outfit. If your outfit consists of more neutral pieces, accessorize with big, bold scarves to add a pop of color or print, or you can keep it neutral for a chic, polished look.
